Luxembourg is a nation-state because of it high population of Roman-Catholics. The state is the only one ruled by a Grand Duchy meaning the country is not technically secular.
Luxembourg is currently a parliamentary democracy in the form of a constitutional monarchy.
For Luxembourg, colonialism was always a very controversial issue. Although their neighboring European countries adhered white supremacy views of colonialism and imperialism, there were many dissenting voices in Luxembourgish journalism.
The hilly area of Oesling occupies the northern third of the country, while the flat Gutland area accupied the bottom two thirds. This boundary divides the country up between the very developed urban and suburban areas in the south and the countryside / mountainside areas of the north.
Although Luxembourg is a unitary state, it is decrentalized into the 12 local governments. The 12 Cantons were divided with the main purpose of territorial and administrative purposes.
Luxembourg officially became a sovereign state in 1839 after the Treaty of London of 19 April 1839. Luxembourg is also the only Grand Dutchy meaning they have a parliamentary democracy in the form of a constitutional monarchy. The Grand Duke is the head of state and legislative power is exercised by the Chamber of Deputies.
In World War II, Luxembourg was invaded by Nazi Germany and became a strategic point to invade France. During the invasion, some Luxembourgers joined the Germans, and others became suppressed of French influence. On top of that, around 3,500 Luxembourgish Jews were murdered during the Holocaust.
Luxembourgers were almost unanimous in their desire to join NATO, an alliance between 30 member states as the aftermath of World War II, in 1949. NATO’s independent member states agree to defend each other against attacks by third parties.
